Education is a ‘hot topic’ in the United States, but it’s time to go global. While we see education as a human right, you might be surprised by the levels of engagement and access to basic education for students around the world. The Schooling Around the World Infographic spotlights, and compares, important data like school hours and the gender gap.

Education By Numbers

• 1.4 Billion Students on Earth
• 65.2 Million Educators globally
• 61 Million primary school-age children were not enrolled in school in 2010
• As of 2012, 31 Million primary-school pupils worldwide dropped out of school
• 1 in 3 young adults are expected to complete university degree before they are 30
• 1 in 5 adult in the developing world, almost 862 Million people are illiterate

The Education Gender Gap

• 31 Million girls, primary school age are not in school
• 17 Million are expected never return to education
• 4 Million fewer boys than girls out of school
• 3 Countries have over 1 Million girls not in school (Nigeria: 5.5 Million, Pakistan: 3 Million, Ethiopia: 1 Million)
• 774 Million people in the world are illiterate, 2/3 of these are females

Education World Facts

• Children in Finland don’t start school till ages 6/7 but rank 1st in Science and Maths
• In the Philippines significantly more girls than boys attend school
• Russia has a 97% enrollment rate
• There is a large gap in literacy rates between boys (88%) and girls (74%) in India
• At age 16 students in Germany have the option of becoming an apprentice in a career they would like to pursue
• Only 34% of adults in Australia have bachelor’s degrees, by 2025 the goal is for 40$ of the nation to hold a bachelor’s degree
• 28% of Afghanistan’s population is literate but only 12% of women can read
• 98% of Japan’s population attends secondary school
• Only 32% of United States students are proficient in math
